Learning Thai in Korat: A Practical Guide for Expats and Spouses

GNAS Nurse Aid & Language School · 21 October 2026

If you live in Korat, you already know the moment. The market vendor asks a question, your Thai partner answers for you, and the conversation moves on without you. In Bangkok or Phuket you can get by in English. In Nakhon Ratchasima and the rest of Isaan, daily life runs in Thai: the landlord, the clinic, the bank counter, the in-laws at Songkran.

This guide is for people who have decided they want to understand what is being said around them, and who want a structured way to get there without moving to Bangkok or Chiang Mai to study.

Why a classroom course, and not just an app

Apps are good for vocabulary. They are weak at three things that matter most in Korat:

  1. Tones and listening. Thai has five tones, and Isaan speakers often mix in local words and rhythm. You need a teacher who hears your mistakes and corrects them in the moment.
  2. Speaking under pressure. A classroom gives you hours of real conversation practice before you try it at the market.
  3. Reading. Signs, menus, forms and LINE messages are all in Thai script. Learning to read early makes everything else faster.

A course also gives you something apps don't: a fixed schedule. Two hours a day, four days a week, adds up quickly.

What a structured course in Korat looks like

GNAS Nurse Aid & Language School (โรงเรียนจีนัสบริบาลและภาษา) is a licensed private school in Nakhon Ratchasima, founded in 2012. In September 2026 the Nakhon Ratchasima Provincial Education Office approved two Thai-as-a-foreign-language courses at the school (permit 7/2569):

CourseHoursSchedule
Thai for Foreigners: Beginner120 hoursMon–Thu, 09:00–11:00
Thai for Foreigners: Intermediate150 hoursMon–Thu, 13:00–15:00

That is 8 hours of class a week. Beginner takes about 15 weeks; Intermediate about 19 weeks. Students must be 15 or older, and the school expects at least 80% attendance. Classes are held in person at the school on Mittraphap Road.

Who these times suit: the daytime schedule works best for people who are not tied to a 9-to-5 job: spouses and partners who have moved to Korat with a Thai or foreign partner, retirees, and anyone with flexible hours who wants to build real conversational Thai.
